Opinions wanted-Do I buy a Ford Five Hundred or 2010+ Taurus?

Post by Deckard_Cain » Sun Aug 25, 2019 12:49 pm

I need a commuter/family car to replace my Jeep for most of my travelling, my original wants/needs were reliability, possibility of upper 20s highway mpg, ease of repair for home mechanics or non-dealer folk, large and spacious interior and a good level of comfort.

I previously had owned a 1994 Grand Marquis and loved it to death, literally to it's death at over 300k miles. After many years of being disappointed by GM vehicles, I feel I need to get back behind the wheel of a Ford, having owned 5 Escorts/Escort GT in the past, an old Ranger that made it beyond 400k miles, and of course, my Grand Marquis.

I had thought the Ford Five Hundred would be perfect, assuming I could find one that was not crazy high mileage, and hopefully had its transmission serviced at least once. Budget was originally about $4000, but has now expanded to a max of $6000 (I'm in Michigan, if that matters.)

I'm finding I can get into a 6th gen Taurus for my new budget, with mileages in the low 100s, 125k-155k miles are common. As well as one 2013 PI I've found with 123k miles and priced below $5k.

What are everyone's feelings about choosing one over the other? I love the styling and technology of the 6th gens, but the comments about the interior and trunk being smaller than even the Five Hundred have me offput.

I have not sat in nor test drove any vehicles yet. What say ye, the Taurus forum? Thanks for the comments and opinons!

Well I have a 05 five hundred and really like it. So far maintenance has been easy and parts reasonable. My friend drives a 2019 Taurus and it seems alot more cramped inside. I dont care for the tall rear end smaller side windows myself. Seems harder to see out of it driving compared to the five hundred. My gas mileage is around 26 on the highway, but about 22 mostly city. Its been a great car to the point i'm searching for another low mileage one to add to my collection. Hope this helps some

I tried to quote the reply above from mobile device but I think I accidentally did so in a pm to canute64; but yes I think that's an accurate assessment of the differences.

I still love the styling, technology and features of the newer models, but it seems I'd be better served by the Five Hundred or Montego.

I do miss my old Grand Marquis though.

Just an update, ended up picking up a 2006 Montego Premier, AWD. More miles on it than I wanted, 185k, but all maintenance has been performed and recorded, so I figure for the price it probably didn't get to 185k on accident, someone must have taken care of it thus far. $2500. Hope it works out... you never know with used cars.

Thanks! So far I love it. The rear shocks were fine when I test drove it, but upon picking it up they were noisey and weak, they did an oil change and I think the weight pulling down caused the rear nivomats to fail.

I've got new shocks coming Thursday. Mine was made 12/2/2005, three days before they switched to standard shocks and heavier springs that following Monday. Lol. Figures. I think I figured out how to retrofit.

The cvt trans looks to have been replaced. It has a paint marker inventory number on it, the fill plug clearly has been removed before, and the cvt fluid is perfect.. Like brand new. No clue about the high pressure filter though.

I plan to replace the filter and top off lost fluid, and then change the various awd fluids.

Got 29.6mpg at 70mph on the 110 mile drive home last Sat. Getting about 23 in the city. I'm pleased with that.

Both my rear shocks are bad. Have new ones but have not installed yet. Not looking forward to doing them myself. Also replacing rear brakes and rotors while I'm at it. Gonna do a complete tune up in a few weeks also. New plugs, coils, valve cover gasket, intake gaskets. Just don't want any problems going forward. I have the 6 speed trans. Changed 4quarts and plan on doing again soon. Just his 93,500 miles on mine. I average about 23 mpg so far. Hoping a complete service will bring it up some.
