Anyone ever flush their PTU???

Post by GonzoWerke » Sat Dec 01, 2018 5:31 pm

I'm about to do the drain plug install and fluid change. Depending on what mine looks like at 152K, I may want to clean it out before the refill.

Has anyone done this? What did you use? WD-40? Sea-Foam? MMO?

Thanks!

The safest flush is to change the fluid and then change it again shortly thereafter. Personally I wouldn’t risk things by using additives like those you mentioned.

I thought all PI’s had a drain plug??

Webmaster is correct, no additves, and if you've gone 152,000 without changing oil, then by this point its either leaked out and if not then its just sludge. I bought mine at 90,000miles and when i drained it, oil came out in clumps. I will post soon how I did a easy back to back flush on my ptu.

I did mine all thru the drain plug. Drained and then pumped in a pre-measured amount and put the plug back into place as I withdrew the hose. Almost need fast hands :)

Mine had apparently been changed before because I got clean fluid out. Not much fluid but clean- no metal and no sludge at 84K miles.

My vent tube was off so it looked like it was leaking pretty good--putting a new tube on was the bitch on a turbo car.

2010 Taurus limited
Replaced PTU 38000 KM, according to Ford the PTU fluid doesn't need to be changed. Having no drain plug & the exhaust down pipe being close to he PTU casing causing heat to brake down the fluid , after 2013 models Ford decides to install drain plugs.
On police vehicles the PTUs have drain plug & a cooler

Took the car to a good friend of mine' shop today. We found the drain plug, and then looked for the vent, in order to fill it. It came out in liquid form, at least not any sludge. Car has 96K on it right now and I wanted to change the PTU so at least I know where it stands. The drain plug has some funk sludge on it. Inside the fluid we collected, you can see really tiny and small flakes but nothing larger.

They also flushed it first and then put in 15oz I think it was in total.

I had to laugh at first, the one mechanic was on Youtube, looking at some of the videos to help them along.

Currently at 71k miles on my 2013 PI. I changed the fluid about 2k miles ago and it came out dark but not black. It appears it’s been changed before thankfully.
