Water pump failure rate?

I just bought a used 2013 Taurus SEL. I thought I had researched it thoroughly. 1 owner, clean Carfax, clean auto-check, new brake rotors and pads. 79000 miles. Got a great deal on the price. But I start wandering into forums and all I see are 2500 dollar water pump replacements. How likely is it that I'm sitting on a grenade? What rate do these water pumps fail? I see some cases of it, but there are millions of Tauruses out there.

You said it, there are a lot of them out there. Also people seek these forums to complain about a problem more than they are to say they don’t have a problem.

2010 ford taurus limited with 156,000 miles on it and have not done water pump yet (knock wood) plenty of people have said their water pump went around 70,000 miles! I think the key is changing your oil and flushing your cooling system!

The water pump thing is scary ! I traded in my 2012 7 months ago for a 2017. I also had over 150k on it and it still looked like new. Since there's no way of telling it's going until it goes I didn't want to risk it. I love the Taurus that's why I got another one. I did change the oil every 4000 miles with full synthetic but I never touched the coolant. I was afraid it would cause a problem. Also if you do not put the Ford specific coolant in the car it will cause failure. I think a lot of people just figure coolant is coolant and they go ahead and put the wrong stuff in there causing early failure. Just my take on it. I will say my 2012 was rock solid. Nothing went bad on the car. all I did was regular standard stuff like tires brakes oil changes and struts and shocks once.

Some failed under warranty so oil changes and coolant flushes aren't the proven method to prevent this built-in problem. I believe the best thing you can do to lower your chances is do proper coolant flushes with the proper coolant, perhaps even earlier than Ford initially recommends. And keep a very close eye on the water pump weep hole, on pretty much a weekly basis. You could also try monthly oil analysis from a place like Blackstone Labs but that's not realistic.. That's still in no way a guarantee that you won't have this problem.
