2012 Taurus- Water collects in door panels

Post by taurus1 » Fri May 18, 2018 4:23 pm

I have a 2012 Ford Taurus SEL and I have noticed that a significant amount of water accumulates in most of the door panels after a heavy rain.
There is a rubber flap at the bottom of each door on the inside and when I lift the flap with the door open the water comes streaming out. If I do not release the water manually, it sloshes around when I am driving.
I do not see any debris coming out which makes me think that there is no obstruction, but I cannot understand why the water does not drain spontaneously.
I find it hard to believe that the Ford Co. would have engineered this arrangement and expected the owner to "drain the doors" after every rainstorm!
How long will it take for the door to rust out?
Has anyone had a similar problem, understand what the problem is, or have a solution for this situation?

My 2005 Five Hundred had the same problem. The doors are designed so that water drains through the doors and out the drain at the bottom, except for my model year, the rubber door seal (weatherstripping) sealed the drain so water accumulates in the door. Ford issued a TSB for the 2005 model year. The recommended fix is to trim the door seal away from the door drain to allow water to drain freely. I did it . . . it only takes 5-10 minutes and problem solved. Take a look. It is likely that your 2012 is exhibiting a similar problem.

How much of the seal do you have to trim? and do you have to trim the entire length? or just at the front and/or back of the door seal

Just trim around the door drain so that it is free to drain . . .about 1 to 1 1/2 inches at each drain.

I have a 2015 SEL with the same problem. It's another dumb design from Ford. Draining water through the doors in the first place is stupid as it's inviting corrosion. Then Ford installs a rubber seal that closes off the weep hole when the door closes....brilliant. This problem has existed for over ten years and Ford refuses to address a simple fix at the factory. No wonder their stock is so low. I love how my Taurus looks and drives but there is some dumb engineering in it.

My 02 & 03 F150’s were very similar, the drain holes are plugged by a weatherstrip and plastic. Rusted away and by the time you could see it, it was bad. Idiotic design. Planned obsolescence perhaps.
