Idle hours - is this high? 2013 PI sedan

Post by Voltaire00 » Wed Feb 21, 2018 10:32 pm

Hello all,

I was curious the other day and looked at my 2013 PIs idle hours and it currently has about 6500 hours, 9450 engine hours with 66,000 miles. I feel that this is pretty high for idle hours, but is there anyone with higher idle hours? Vehicle drives smooth and nothing appears abnormal. Anything preventive to replace other than CATs and the water pump with the 3.5L non turbo? Car has new CATs and water pump.

6500 is a lot, but there are cars with more. If your car has any patrol history, it's going to have idle hours.

My car had 46k miles and 321 idle hours out of a total 1442 hours.

If you do the math, that's 1121 moving hours over 46k miles, or an average speed of 41mph

(That translates to mostly highway- if you've ever had an average speed display in your car, it's incredibly difficult to keep a moving average above 40mph with out significant highway time).

In your case, that's 2950 moving hours over 66k miles, or an average speed traveled 22mph. (Definitely mostly urban/town driving).

People make a big deal about the idle hours, and obviously less is better, but in the end, it's idling and it's a car that's made to idle. You could argue that when it's idling it's not getting beaten, run over curbs, potholes, etc. You can just do the hours to miles conversion and just ear-mark some extra things for preventative maintenance based on that theoretical mileage. If you have the cats and water pump done, I'd say you're looking good.

If the car looks and runs well, and you like it, don't be too uptight about it. You liked the car enough to part with money for it. Drive it and have a good time.

It really depends on the patrol history.

I have 2433 idle and 4320 run with 103k miles on it. 2014.

1 idle hour = 33 miles (of engine wear). You do the math.
