Rear Disc Conversion for 2007 Taurus?

Post by BigDogg » Fri May 19, 2017 7:55 am

Does anyone know of any aftermarket rear disc conversion kit that help me install rear discs from a late 90's Taurus/Sable to my 2007? If not is the only way I can do it is to pull parts off myself from a junkyard? They are hard to find now and if I do find them would the conversion work because my car does not has ABS?

Why do you want to switch to disc? Unless you have a performance car or drive in a spirited manner the benefit is minimal IMHO. How does your car not have ABS, did you disable it?
2000 Ford Taurus SEL (excellent car, sold to a friend)
1992 Mercury Sable GS (good car except for the tranny, sold)

I had the 3.0L Vulcan rebuilt and stroked to 3.3L with a stroker kit from Tom Morana Racing. I also lowered 1" with King lowering springs, relapaced the stock front discs with cross drilled and slotted front units, new drums in the back and performance pads and shoes. The exhaust was replaced with a custom header back exhaust with high flow cats (3) and dual tailpipes. After the engine was installed I had a performance tune to take advantage of these mods and the top speed was raised to 130. They estimate the horsepower at 240 at the crank. With the mods it would be a smart idea to upgrade the weak point of the car which is the rear brakes. The reason I assume the car has no factory brakes is because other fords I own in the past had an ABS warning lamp in the dash. This car doesn't.

Wagons have rear discs as well as Lin Cont which are identical. At least '00 and later wagons have parts that should go on a sedan. JY parts.

I believe your VIN will tell you if you have ABS, I find it highly unlikely that you don't. Perhaps the dash bulb is burned out or missing??

'93 and later Ford, Mercury, Lin Cont all use the same caliper and rotor. See Rockauto for what fits what. Ford ends with '07 and Lin with '02.

Replacing drums with discs isn't a simple swap. You need to check if there are other part changes, like the master cylinder, ABS system, or any proportioning valves. Even the parking/emergency brake may require different parts or cable.

Since most of the components of the third and forth generation Taurus/Sable shares suspension components adding rear disc would more likely require a parts car with the parts in need on top of the brackets, calipers, and rotors. I will have to do more research but I believe I can make it work. All my dash lights work but there is no ABS indicator. I will trace the VIN in the morning to verify. Thanks for all the help..

There usually is no ABS light, just a general brake light, the same one that lights up when you put on the park brake.

My '03's, present, and past '01 as well as my Lin Cont have "ABS" light that comes on when the key is first turned to "on", as per the owner's guide. My Sables also have "ABS" sticker on the driver's door glass.

The 2007 Taurus owners manual does say there is an ABS light, on the left side of the display. It does say 'if equipped'. Either the light has gone dead (do the 2007's still use bulbs or did they update to LED's) or the car doesn't have ABS. Not sure if it was standard on all, or if it was an option on el-strippo base models.

If you don't have the window sticker, maybe this will work?

Or look under for the tone rings, any wheel will do.
I think all wagons have discs on the rear, and all have ABS.

A friend came over with his 2006 Taurus SES and I got under his car to check it out. His car has ABS. Has tone rings and sensors. It also has an ABS light on the dash. I also drove it and you can feel the ABS working when you use the brakes unlike mine so I guess conversation is out of the question. Oh well. Thanks anyway.
