Headlight Bulb replacement?

Post by GhostRider » Mon Sep 26, 2016 7:27 pm

Anyone know an easy way to change the headlights without taking apart the front end or paying the dealer to do it?? I have the projector lamps so I believe the bulb # is 9012.

Makes me miss my old Crown Victoria, where a bulb change took 2 mins.

You can get to these fairly easily - The driver side requires you to pull out the airbox, no big deal. Should be able to do both in around 30 minutes.

If you haven't purchased replacement bulbs, do yourself a HUGE favor and order a couple of these Volsa +30 bulbs - 1000% better than the HIR2 POS that is the Ford OEM. Amazon has them as GM parts at about $18 each. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0195LGZF8/

Certainly worth the price.

The dealer changed it for $11.00. I think thats worth the hassle. They did want to charge me $55 for the 9012 bulb. I said "no way" and ran to Auto Zone and got the bulb for $24 and had them install it.

What is the procedure to change it though? I see the parking lamps, but the low/high beam?

Hi GhostRider,

On mine, there's a round, black plastic cap - it may or may not have an black ZIP tie on it, covering the actual area where you take the bulb out. Pop that cover off and you can easily R&R the headlight bulbs. For the driver side, as stated above, you need to remove the airbox, I think that was like 3 screws IIRC.

If you have issues with the OEM bulbs, see my post above re:Volsa +30's. Ford's OEM HIR2/9012's absolutely suck.

We replaced the complete headlights on our 2014 focus SE with LED, much brighter and great cutoff. I won't recommend the company we bought from as the first bulb burned out after 3 months and trying to get a replacement was impossible. Tried emailing and numerous phone calls to no avail, finally gave up and ordered a pair of LED bulbs from a different company so that I have a spare when the other bulb dies . I won't go this route on our 2015 Taurus SEL,possibly put a set of PIAA bulbs in as I have had good experiences with them in the past.

Are these direct plug and play or do they have to be modified? I've tried the more expensive Phillips Crystal Vision and the Silver Stars and I didn't see any real difference. I also tried the aftermarket HID route and that didn't work, either. You could tell there was more light output but it didn't improve visibility and the pattern was really weird. I love this car but absolutely hate the headlights. I'd like to give these Vosla bulbs a try but they don't give any specs on Amazon about them. How are they better than the 9012 HIR2s that Ford recommends?

I 100% agree with other's that the factory bulbs suck on this vehicle. I am interested in getting white lights such as LED, or even HID's. I can not find too much information online on HID's in a 2015 Ford Taurus Limited, Could anybody help me out? I have read somewhere that they may even be illegal to put in? Does anybody have any suggested on any good LED/HID brands?

My headlights have always sucked. Never been very bright. I've had a headlight go out twice and I didn't even know it because the lights suck that bad. I always thought Ford's headlights blinded ya.. but not mine. Any suggestions?

I replace the 9012s on my '13 P-I at least every 6 months (partly due to a lot of Lyft/Uber night driving. I also would like to go LED on the headlights. I already did the tail-lights, which work great except for the flashing rate is like I have a bad bulb when I use turn-signal (double-time). 4-Way/hazards are fine, I suspect I need to change something for the turn-signals - does anyone know what that would be? Thanks in-advance.
