Disable MyKey to keep car on with Remote Start

Post by StevenRFrancis » Wed Jan 18, 2012 4:09 pm

Hello,
My name is Steven, and last month I got a 2012 Taurus SE with remote start.
My previous car stayed on after I used the remote start and went in to drive away.
The Taurus annoyed me and my wife with how it turned off after opening a door.
My wife challenged me to fix this. So, I did a Google search and found a post on another forum that explained the procedure.

The below procedure is NOT originally from me. I took one provided my user “mbyers” on the other site and modified it to how I saw fit for my application.

NOTES:
This procedure is for the SE model with the FORD Power Code Remote Start dealer installed option with “MyKey”
I cannot guarantee that the Models with the Push-Button start will get the same results. My guess is that it should.
Be SURE ALL keys are set as ADMIN BEFORE proceeding! There is a possibility that any keys that are limited by MyKey will NOT work after this procedure.

A:
Remove the kick panel below the steering column

B:
Locate the remote start module

C:
Locate the programming status LED and programming override switch.
The remote override button is 'easy' to find. It is taped to a harness, kind of right under the steering column. The remote module is tie wrapped above the kick panel (black box). The LED is tapped to the same harness and is about 1 inch from that button (between the button and the remote start module).

D:
Pull out the override switch so it is easier to press while sitting in the seat.

E:
Perform programming to disable “MyKey” functionality.
1. Sit in the car with the door closed (has to be closed to enter programming mode).
2. Press and hold brake pedal (keep it pressed).
3. Turn ignition key to run (one position from start which lights up all the gauges).
4. Reach under the dash and press and hold the override button for about 10 seconds until horn beeps 3 times.
5. After the three horn beeps, release the override button.
6. Release brake pedal.
7. Open the door and now get your head under the dash (so you can see the LED light up; it won't be lit yet, but once it is, it will be obvious).
8. Press and release override button (horn beeps 4 times, indicating bank 1).
9. Press and release override button (horn beeps 5 times, indicating bank 2).
10. Press brake with hand (horn beeps 1 time, indicating option 1). LED ON
11. Press brake with hand (horn beeps 2 times, option 2). LED ON
12. Press brake with hand (horn beeps 3 times, option 3). LED OFF
13. Press brake with hand (horn beeps 4 times, option 4). LED ON
14. Press brake with hand (horn beeps 5 times, option 5). LED OFF
15. Press brake with hand (horn beeps 6 times, option 6). LED ON
16. Press brake with hand (horn beeps 7 times, option 7). LED ON (this is the one you need to change.)
17. QUICKLY Press and release the button on the remote start fob; the LED will go off.
18. Press brake with hand (horn beeps 8 times, option 8). LED OFF
19. Get out and turn ignition key to off and take the key out.
20. Close door and remote start your car.

F:
Verify Performance
You should be able to unlock and open the door with the car staying on.
Place the key into ignition and turn to “ON”
You can now operate the vehicle

NOTES:
If you turn the key to “START” the radio and climate control will turn off then back on, engine will stay on.
If you do not shift out of park, the car will stay on after you take the key out.
I have NO idea how this will work with Push-Button start models.

LOL, yeah, I actually have been roaming around this forum and a couple others for a couple months now. I figured I have been provided with a mountain of information, and there must be others like me.
So I put something together to give back to the community. 8)

Hello Guys and Gals,

I wanted to know if anyone has tried this?
Especially people with the push-button start models. Can you drive off with the car if you don't have the Key fob near the car?

I dont have any information on use since I got the new 13 with remote start but not keyless start. I would however like to give a shout out to Mr. Francis for his good attention to detail and use of photos during involved projects like this..keep up the good work Mr. Francis.

Yes, the procedure clearly states that you have to put in the key and turn it to Run to operate the car. With the pushbutton start system I fear this will not work. I believe the system must see one of the keys that are programmed into it for the car to run, hence the reason for needing a restart. It looks like the factory has come up with a solution for this on the 13's.

I confirmed this procedure works the same with starting the car as well.
So press the brake and keep is pressed after pressing the "START" button.
You can continue the procedure with the car engine running.

Same with 201A Lock door hit Remote start X2 times, Unlock door, insert key turn to ignition until the Side displays come alive apply brake put in gear and drive away. There should be no power interupption.

Great!
So for sure FORD fixed the issue with 2013 models.
Let's see how esfoad or someone else with a 2010-2012 fairs when they use the procedure above with the keyless start models.

Hi all. I just tried this procedure on my 2010 SHO with pushbutton start. I was unable to get the module into programming mode. May be me but I tried it with starting the car while holding the brake and then holding the override button. This did not work so I tried to put the car into run mode without holding the brake but holding the start button for a couple seconds, then pressing the brake and the override button but this did not work either. So I'm stuck for now unless anyone has another suggestion to get the remote start module into programmimg mode. Oh wee, I don't find it to be such a pain but it would be cool if the car would not die when opening a door or the trunk.

esfoad,

Thanks for the update. If you are taking the car to the dealer anytime soon, you can try to ask them if they know how. It's a long-shot, but it can't hurt to try.

Thank you. Was easy to follow your directions...and it worked first try. I have a 2012 Taurus SEL.
Thank you, again. :D

I am on my third Taurus. 2012, 2015, and 2018, all were SEL AWD. On all of them the car did not shut off when you open and closed any of the doors. The 2012 & 2018 were/are key start, and the 2015 was push button start.

On the question about being able drive the car away with push button start, mine wouldn't shift into gear and unlock the steering wheel if the key fob wasn't in the car. With the key fob in the car, you had to step on the brake and push the start button to unlock the shifter and steering wheel.
