center console ?, also, service manual needed
center console ?, also, service manual needed
I'm on a mission to install a center console myself. i have a 2013 interceptor and found a center console i need to pick up from a salvage yard. The first basic question is: there is a black metal plate running the center of my vehicle, between the front seats. I guess that's what was used to mount the lights, radio, and other law enforcement tools. Will i need that for a civilian center console or can i remove that metal plate?
I have not been able to find photos on this website, if anyone has photos of the process, that'd help me out. I know there are brackets that need to go with the console, other than that im lost at this time.
Does anyone have a service manual for 2013 and/or up to 2017 taurus in PDF format? I want to learn how to install/fix some of the items on my interceptor.
Thanks

Re: center console ?, also, service manual needed
iirc that plate comes out. youll bolt your console to the dash and then use the rear mounting holes on the trans tunnel for rear bolts.
MAKE SURE you get both the carpet filler panels below both sides of the console AND both sides of the trim pieces that run from top of console up to dash and have holes for key/trunk button. youll have to order the filler piece in the dash.....cant get that from the salvage car.
the pi has all the wiring youll need to run lights, usb, seat warmers etc. once you remove the lower dash cover

That is a huge help, thanks.
Re: center console
There is a panel under the radio, just near the gas pedal. its on both driver and passenger side. how is that panel removed? do i pry it off using a plastic trim removal tool or are there some screws that i missed? so far ive been able to remove panels but im stuck at this point.
Not sure if I have to remove the panel under the steering wheel, or whether i can just pry that panel off.
This should be the past piece before I attach my console.

I did take the panel under wheel off, but cant remember if that was for my new footwell lighting or for that panel. There is a capture spring on the inside, can't make out what the lower fastener is. A hefty yank toward the back seats may be all you need.

Re: center console ?, also, service manual needed
its been slow in these forums, dang.
took off the shift knob. polished the center console. tried to install but the current radio faceplate is not compatible with the console. the photos can explain better.
I'll be upgrading to an 8" screen and swapping out the radio faceplate to match the new screen, im sure that will be a headache in itself. never done any of this before. stay tuned

Re: center console ?, also, service manual needed
so here is my other predicament. The wire from the vehicle does not match the wire from the center console. Is there an adapter I need to get or is that the wrong wire from the vehicle? I can't find another one in the vehicle.
I looked at all the write ups and i dont think this was mentioned. And i don't have a service manual

Re: center console ?, also, service manual needed
Bought same console pretty much out of a 2014 limited taurus and having the same issues.. did upgrading to the 8" radio/bezel solve your fitment issue? and did your connections work out fine with your original radios harnesses? Trying to decide if i should just buy the base sel radio bezel i found or attempt to install the 8" radio/bezel and the little controller for the unit. Appreciate any further info on how this went!
Also had same issues with center console harness not matching the card plug sadly same as the issue already pictured in this post. Lol wish this forum was more active!

re: console harness - it's been years since I did mine so take my memory with a grain of salt. The civi console harness (female) doesn't have a matching PI (male) harness. You just bypass that and wire in your electronics after tracing your wires. The console may well have the sync module/etc. that you can't use.

Re: center console ?, also, service manual needed
I just installed center console in my pi, and ran into the same problem with those trim pieces not fitting around the radio, I took some side cutters and simply cut those tabs off the trim part. I’m going to make a custom trim peice to close the gap below the heater controls

it looks better if you get the base LX face plate.

Agreed, but it’s also very expensive.

Re: center console ?, also, service manual needed
What do people mean by lx face plate I found a radio faceplate from a base taurus sel can find them normally for 50-90$ easily on eBay often. It looks slightly longer with a little indentation towards the bottom Is this the LX faceplate mentioned?

Will this work to solve the gap issue?

I was mistaken, looks like that faceplate from base model is what crownedking was referring too, I thought he was suggesting another trim part that can be purchased.

uzi4life, yes it will fit and close the gab, but you need to retain the a/c temp fan part from the police console and use tubing under the console to get air flow. I've done two like this and they look great.

Re: center console ?, also, service manual needed
when you cut the tabs off, do the trim pieces still fit nice and snug around the radio?Saunders1986 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 28, 2018 10:51 amI just installed center console in my pi, and ran into the same problem with those trim pieces not fitting around the radio, I took some side cutters and simply cut those tabs off the trim part. i never did change my faceplate as there is no way to use the 8" screen since we can't upgrade from 4" to 8" (damn you ford!)
