Malfunctioning Instrument Cluster

Post by warment » Mon Oct 03, 2011 1:17 pm

Weird thing happened to me on Friday while driving my 2005 500 back from the airport.

Got in the car, started it up and found that the entire cluster was out. However, the airbag light was lit. Turned off the car and restarted a few times...same result. Got out and looked for damage/scratches to the car...nothing.

I ended up driving home on I-95 without a speedometer. Interesting. The odometer was also out. Lastly, the AC wouldn't work either, but the fan and redirection selection worked fine. Looked under the steering wheel expecting to see a blow fuse or two...nope. Reseated one of the harness plugs that connected into the fuse junction box and everything was fixed.

Last week, my cluster acted up again...this time, the speedo and tach needles dropped for a second, and then came back to life while I was driving. The backlighting was fine when this happened though. Also, the HVAC stuff worked fine. No CEL either.

I have had no problems since. Seems like I have an intermittant electrical failure somewhere...and it takes a second or two to fix itself...

How old is your battery? If a battery is on it's way out the door it can start messing with things like this, might be worth having your battery checked out.

I put a new one in less than a year ago. I have hit two deer with the car since I have had it. Some connection must be coming loose somewhere...

Was their major damage done? Could be a bad grounding connection. Is the fuse/relay box on the mid drivers side of the engine bay?

That's what I thought at first too. I couldn't see anything wrong though. The first deer I hit years ago caused more damage (over $8k). I needed a new front left fender that time. This time the damage was around $2k.

The problem might be where you can't see. :(

I filled up with gas this past weekend, and as I left the gas station, the airbag light stayed on. And then the seatbelt light/chime kept going off/blinking at me like I had forgotten to buckle up (but I was belted in). Drove all the way home like that with the light and chime going off every 30 seconds or so -- it was only about 3 miles. And the airbag light stayed on the whole time. Got home, turned the car off, waited about a minute, started it up again and it hasn't happened since. Did it once before almost exactly a year ago. What is up with that? (Naturally, the car is now out of warranty)

Not sure. I haven't had a single problem since my last post. Weird...

I had to change out the fuse junction box underneath the dash on driver side. There was white corrosion on the circuit boards underneath the wiring harness causing this exact issue. Replacing it solved the issue amd even after exact matching numbers on the back of the fuse panel box, i have No key FOB use, or running or tail lights.
