Wrecked 2013 PI

Post by zoo9guy » Wed Jun 05, 2019 10:29 am

Anybody have experience with fixing this ind of damage on a Taurus PI? My son bought this one a few weeks ago and got in a wreck yesterday, I'm thinking of picking it up cheap and doing a rebuild. What say you? yea or nay...

ooh - sorry to see that, front end crash with airbag deployment.

hope your kid is ok. what happened?

disclaimer - i am not a licensed mechanic or body shop prof and i didn't sleep at a holiday inn last nite -
  • front end collision
  • airbag deployment
  • possible frame damage (judging by angle of Setina push bar)
  • radiator/fan damage
  • possible engine damage judging by fluids on ground
  • hidden damage
just going by what i've seen on Copart and similar sites - ins companies seem to total out cars of this age and similar damage, especially wrecked PIs.

https://www.copart.com/lot/36521909

retail - in my area at least used 2013 PIs with 120 - 150k are going for about $5900 - $6500 retail. so, estimating a wholesale cost of around $2600-ish.

if you have the skills and the time you could have a nice project for a daily driver if you can pick up the car for around $1000-ish.

if you decide to buy and rebuild - start a thread with your progress - i know i'd like to follow it.

Honest input from someone who has rebuilt 2 totaled vehicles with frame damage - no, this isn't a worthwhile project.

First, every state has different rebuilding requirements - make sure you are crystal clear on your state's laws.
Second, rebuilding a vehicle at home (aka on the cheap) can make sense for those with the skills and time......BUT it had better be a vehicle that's worth the work. A tired 2013 PIS in my area can be had for $3000+ - that's not a vehicle worth rebuilding.
A 2019-2020 PI explorer with 18,000 miles? Sure, worth the work, but not a vehicle that already can be had for very low $$$ without the work, unexpected parts, junkyard diving, etc.

Thanks for the input guys, the motor runs, he drove it out of traffic and to the side of the road, the radiator is toast for sure. The insurance company called and they a totalling it, still doing market analysis for pay out. If I can get it cheap enough, I might rebuild it for snorts and giggles. I'd drop the sub frame motor and tranny, throw a new water pump on it, change the lube In the PTU while it's apart. I'll post about it as things progress.

By the way my 26 year old 6'4" 300 lb. Son said the air bag brushed his forearms, but otherwise didn't make contact with him. He's fine, I told him about Tracy Morgan wrecking his 2 million dollar Bughatti 10 minutes after buying it...poop happens

Well the story ends for this PI it's going to the scrap yard...my son bought this one for 5,600 and only had it for a month...he was smart enough have full coverage, the insurance company is paying out 10,700 so he is thrilled. The insurance company wants 2,500 for the wreck, after looking into parts it's at least 2500 minimum for parts plus frame straightening, so not worth it, thanks for the advice Mope! I'll be on the hunt for a new one.

Do you still have this car?
I need wires and sockets for front turn signals

sorry to hear it's the end for your son's ride. glad he's unhurt!

track the vin by setting a google alert - odds are high you'll get a notification once this thing hits Copart.

you might even be able to get it cheap at auction - albeit with a salvage title.
