Not sure how many of you watch or subscribe to MacT Ford Edge on Youtube. MacT has driven 3 different Ford Edges over 500,000 combined mikes without ONE waterpump failure. He has conducted a rather extensive study into this vexing problem which has included cutting open and examining failed water pumps from both gen.1 and gen.II 3.5 liter Duratec's. His conclusion is that the pumps fail because the rubber gasket on the water side of the pump develops a leak causing water to get into the bearings of the shaft which quickly degrade and cause the oftentimes catastrophic failure resulting in coolant mixing with oil. His theory is that the rubber gasket degrades because acids in the coolant (as it gets older) attack the rubber and eat away at the seal. He is a stickler for maintenance and changes his coolant on a yearly basis due to the fact that he drives 60,000+ miles per year. He has now stated he is going to do a drain and refill (not a complete flush) of his coolant every 3 months or 15,000 miles. I think he is onto something here. His 2008 Edge went 285,000 nearly problem free miles. He also owns two 2011 Edge's.. one with 200,000 miles and another with +or- 100,000 miles. Never a waterpump failure. Changing coolant more frequently would be a nice and cheap alternative to a $2,000 repair or $8,000 engine replacement.

Thanks for the info, I haven't watched or heard of that guy, I'll check him out. Yeah unfortunately this is one of those issues where it won't crop up right away and if you don't catch it early enough (which is extremely difficult) it will be catastrophic.

Im at about 110K on my bull. No problems. I maintain my vehicles per the Ford recommended schedule.

Remember, Ford recommends transmission fluid changes at 150,000 mile intervals and claims that the PTU fluid is lifetime in AWD vehicles. I think most of us know by now that this isn't realistic. Their goal is to sell cars and my goal is to do everything in my power to NOT have to buy another car (for a long while, anyway). By the time your waterpump blows and your transmission (or PTU) fails, the car is long out of warranty and no longer Ford's responsibility. Everyone has to make their own decision in regards to maintenance based on how long they want their car to last and the state of their finances. Wishing you the best of luck!
