Code P013C on 2013 Ford Taurus

Post by GhostRider » Tue May 26, 2015 4:50 pm

I keep getting the following DTC

P013C - Fuel & Air Metering

What could be causing this? I erase it with my code reader and a week or week and a half later its back.

P013C is a generic OBD-II code and means O2 Sensor Slow Response Rich to Lean Bank 2 Sensor 2.

Use a code scanner to monitor the O2 sensor readings (rear sensors), compare to spec. Visually inspect the wiring also to make sure there aren't melted wires, etc.

If you determine that you need a new sensor, I recommend OEM as first choice (some aftermarket ones are not "accurate enough" is probably the best way to describe it).

It may be covered under the powertrain warranty, I would ask the dealer or check your warranty guide for specific coverage details.

Ford Workshop Manual recites Webmaster's thoughts. WSM advises to check/replace sensor but also consider the possibility of an exhaust leak.

+1 on warranty, this may be covered under powertrain coverage if you're out of your 3/36.

My powertrain warranty is gone (car has 63K miles).

I always let the Ford dealer do the work. Figured it was an O2 sensor. I'll have the dealer look in to this.

Took it in today and the tech states, "applied shop air to the exhaust system and found small leak from bank 2 manifold/converter flange. Replaced exhaust flange gasket (7T4Z-9450-AA). Retest verified leak was gone after repair. Cleared codes, test drove and verified light stayed off."

I am $179.09 lighter...lol

So I took it in today. The dealer is now saying I need a new exhaust manifold.

What bothers me is I can't find that code in the service manual. :/

Jason -- check PC/ED manual it's in there

P013C - O2 Sensor Slow Response - Rich To Lean (Bank 2, Sensor 2)

Description: During a deceleration fuel shut-off (DFSO) event, the PCM monitors how quickly the heated oxygen sensor bank 2, sensor 2 (HO2S22) switches from rich to lean. The measured rate of the rich to lean switch is compared to a calibrated fault threshold value. The threshold value takes into account the level of oxygen in the catalyst, which has an impact on how quickly the rich to lean switch occurs. This DTC sets when the measured value is slower than the threshold value.

Possible Causes:
Exhaust leaks before or near the HO2S22
Damaged HO2S22
Diagnostic Aids: Check for leaks in the exhaust system.

Im going to be pissed if it comes back after a new exhaust manifold. At least the dealership is picking up the labor and all I have in it is the part, but thats still over $460.00

Did they actually affirmatively diagnose a bad manifold or is this a guess based on the mere return of the code?

If the manifold were bad, you'd think they'd have realized it during a leak test...

To me, it sounds like a guess. They thought the exhaust flange gasket was the cause. In fact, when the service writer called me, he told me the exhaust flange gasket was the cause again and then I told him that was replaced last time.

I have a great relationship with this dealer so I have no reason to believe they would screw me over.

Well they obviously must be seeing a leak with the soapy water test. Hope it's not the head itself. Must be right at the meeting of the manifold and head. I would naturally think the gasket would be the first thing to replace. Still leaking though and they "forget" they already did the gasket the first time....that is pure laziness and failure to look at the service history.

Any luck on getting this resolved? I just found CEL with same code, did a search online and it was suggested an update may be required. See SSM 44381

SSM 44381 - 2011-2014 - Gasoline Vehicles - Updated PC/ED Diagnostics to Address P013A or P013C
Pin Point Test (PPT) DW in the Powertrain Control/Emission Diagnostic (PC/ED) manual has recently been updated to reflect improved exhaust leak detection. Some 2011 - 2014 vehicles may exhibit a Malfunction Indicator Lamp illuminated with Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P013A or P013C stored in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). These DTC's are typically caused by very small exhaust leaks in close proximity to the Catalyst Monitor Sensors and/or further upstream.
Leaks in the exhaust system will change the expected oxygen content readings to the PCM under certain conditions. Do not replace downstream Catalyst Monitor Sensors before performing the updated PPT diagnostics.

I never resolved this unfortunately, now I think it may be time. I am getting both P013A and P013C now. Might have to look in to that exhaust manifold I guess.
