Auto-dimming Rearview Mirrors

Post by BullBill » Mon Oct 31, 2011 6:42 pm

On a recent trip, I noticed that when I was driving in complete darkness, the auto-dimming mirrors (inside & driver's outside) worked fine. I could see kind of a subdued greenish tint of headlights behind me in the mirrors and no bright glare. But when I was on 4 or 5 lane freeways with heavy traffic, the auto-dimming would not work. I'm wondering if the "sea" of lights behind and around the car creates the illusion that it's not dark out so the auto-dimming feature does not work.
Has anyone else experienced this? Or do you know how this feature is supposed to work?

The auto dimming mirror has 3 light sensors (CdS resistor) 2 are mounted facing the rear window, one is mounted in the front of the mirror, only when the front facing CdS registers minimal light, will it allow the rear sensors to dim the monochromatic mirror when there are headlights blaring from behind, so in theory if there is enough light coming or blinding you from the front, it will not tint the mirror no matter how much light is coming from the rear.

I wish I could "switch off" the auto dimming. Yes, I know most people like it, but in my other car, and all previous cars, I could switch it off, as I the headlights behind me don't bother me.

Thanks, greeknetsurfer, for the info on how the system works. It's really too bad they used the "forward" sensor to activate the dimming, because if you've got bright lights glaring at you from the rear, it's still bothersome even in dimly lit areas. I've had auto-dimming on other cars, and the feature worked all the time if you had headlights behind and near you.

On my '08 I have been playing around with different levels of tint on the sensors to "trick" the system into thinking its darker. may be worth a try.

I took Greeknetsurfer's explanation as gospel and have just learned to live with it. I really don't want to mess with the sensors for warranty reasons. Still can't figure out why the engineers designed it this way though.

I've got 20% tint on my windows and my auto-dimming works the same as it did with no tint.

The auto dimming feature is what replaced the little flip tap on the bottom in yesteryear cars.

Wouldn't a piece of electrical tape on the forward sensor fix the problem?
