Tapatalk Disabled

Post by Webmaster » Tue Apr 26, 2016 8:30 pm

Hey guys I just wanted to give you guys a heads up that I've disabled Tapatalk access to the site. I expect this may be a permanent change.

Basically what that means is that you'll have to use your browser to interact here in the forum. Pretty much all the same functionality is here in the browser, as the site is mobile friendly without modification. No matter when you are using a tablet, mobile, or desktop, you should be presented with a functional, usable site.

I use Tapatalk as a user and I totally get it's good points, push notifications, access to all forums in one list, etc. However, as an admin there have been a number of bad decisions made by Tapatalk (IMHO) and poor support over the last few years. Not to mention some known security issues which have bothered me (TT either doesn't patch the issues or takes a long time to do so).

Honestly what is the "last straw" is the fact that TT started inserting mandatory signatures (e.g. "Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk") *directly* into the database on this site's server that really steams me. Even if TT is uninstalled, the signatures remain. I strongly disagree with that decision. They shouldn't be inserting their own advertising right into your posts in the database.

I know that I'm not alone in dropping support, there are other forum admins doing the same. I am looking at alternative options in the mean time.

I value your feedback, let me know what you think. I know it will probably upset a few users but I feel in the long run it's not wise to continue to work with TT from an admin perspective.

Stats show we average 4-5 daily TT users with 13 posts made in the last month. Considering there have are 63 active topics in entire forum within the last month I anticipate the impact will be minimal.

I would encourage everyone to bookmark this link --> http://www.fordtaurus.net/forums/search ... ive_topics

That link will always take you first to see all active recent discussions. That is the closest to the TT functionality. Bookmark that on your tablet, mobile or desktop to stay in the loop on what's going on.

Tapatalk's been going downhill for a while. Used to use it religiously, but gave up.

I agree.

As a user I hated that for a couple years every time they updated the software they made usability go down the tubes. They took something that was simple and easy to use and made it more difficult.

I've also found out that TT now creates chat rooms for the forums without giving forum admins any control or say over having it or using it. So that's even worse, they're literally using our users for their own purposes. One forum admin was pretty upset because they ran a forum targeted to people under 20 and there were some unsolicited adult type messages going in the chat room and couldn't do anything about it.

I've also had complaints in the past of users getting e-mails they didn't sign up for. Guess what that traced back to? TT turning on notifications when people posted but they were unaware.

So many bad decisions over the years by the TT developers.

For what it's worth I found two potential options for providing push notifications. One is Pushbullet and the other Pushover. Unfortunately neither are compatible with the forum software used here.
