We just passed the 100,000 mile mark. Is it realistic for a shade tree mechanic to do a tune-up on this or should I take it to my local shop? They told me it calls for three hours labor because they have to take off the intake. ANY info would be very helpful, Thanks :D :D

The rear cylinder bank spark plugs do require that you remove the upper portion of the intake manifold, but from looking at the engine, it doesn't look that hard, and I think it's an O-ring seal, so it's not messy. Just be careful torquing the bolts on the plastic manifold - you could easily crack the plastic or spin one of the thread inserts.

Also, if you haven't been changing your transmission fluid, make sure to do that - plenty of threads here on it.

Upper intake removal is not that hard.

Plugs (Motorcraft)
Fuel Filter
Trans Fluid
PCV Cartridge
Check Exhaust, Brakes, undercarriage etc
Lube locks and Hinges

That should be all.

I am pretty sure our tune up was around 129.99 with labor. It was really reasonable especially when you pop the hood and see what a tight squeeze some of the place are to get to. Then again compared to the flathead V8 I have.....and all of the space surrounding it!

My husband and I attempted to change out the spark plugs and ignition coil yesterday on my Ford 500, 2005. It was unsuccessful. We were unable to figure out how to get the intake off... Any help would be great.

As far back as I can remember the upper intake does not have to be removed to r&i the rear bank spark plugs if you have the proper tools.(IE,swivel sockets and wobble extensions.)

Most veteran techs spend 50K to 200K for their tools.

RS

I would use a twelve inch length of 5/32 vacuum hose attached to the spark plug tip to start the new plugs.

Tricks of the trade...
